Neverwinter Nights Expansions See Mac Release
08.12.04 - 9:44 PM

After what seemed like an eternity, MacSoft was responsible for bringing the hit PC RPG Neverwinter Nights to the Mac last July. It was about this time that the game's first expansion, Shadows of Undrentide, was released for Windows-based PCs. Late in 2003, another expansion, Hordes of the Underdark was also released. Neither were available for Mac players, however, until now.

In a move sure to please the three or four Mac readers we have, MacSoft has released both expansions for the Mac at the same MSRP of $29.99 as their PC counterparts. The requirements for Shadows call for a system running Mac OS X 10.2.8 or later, a 450 MHz G4 processor, 256 MB of RAM, an ATI Radeon or Nvidia GeForce2 MX video card with a minimum of 32MB VRAM, an 8X CD-ROM and 1.2 GB of free HD space. Hordes has identical requirements, except that it requires an 800 MHz or faster processor.

Of course, some Mac users may not need these expansions, as a group of developers known as Open Knights have created an open-source tool that will allow people who own the Windows versions of these expansions to install them on a Mac, provided the user has the Mac version of the original game installed.

Of course, this method isn't officially supported by Bioware, and given that there's no price difference between platforms, new users may simply want to opt for the Mac-specific versions. Otherwise, take a look at Open Knights' project page.
