New Paper Mario 2 Details Announced

Nintendo has provided some new details on its GameCube sequel to Paper Mario (Mario Story in Japan). While still featuring a turn-based system, developer Intelligent Systems will introduce action elements in Paper Mario 2 by implementing a so-called command ring, which lets you execute actions such as jumping. To perform actions successfully, the right timing is required, otherwise the character will not perform the desired action. The command ring will also allow players to select a certain battle strategy for their characters. Apart from battles, mini-games will play a major role in this sequel.

Just like most genre representatives, Paper Mario 2 will offer inns and item shops, where you can spend the money earned by defeating enemies. At so-called Badge Shops, Mario can purchase badges which enable him to use certain special abilities in battle.

Story-wise, many characters from the Mario world are set to make an appearance in the game, including some giant enemy characters. Furthermore, there seems to be a door which has been sealed for a thousand years.

Paper Mario 2 will be available in the US in late 2004.
