First Look at Castlevania on PS2
04.30.03 - 3:59 AM

Castlevania is finally on its way to the PS2, and yes, it's 3D. But don't lose hope yet...

While this story is a few days old, and many people have probably seen the "scans" at other websites, we didn't wish to post anything until getting a legit image. The initial images that were released were clearly grabbed from a computer screen as opposed to an actual mag, not to mention the green color cast present.

So, technicalities and legalities aside (as some of said images are now missing...), we present you with an actual magazine scan below from the June 2003 EGM. It's a bit large, but we did that so you're able to read the accompanying text.

Those concerned about a 3D Castlevania title can stop worrying, as the producer of this new (and untitled) installment is the team behind the renowned Symphony of the Night for the PSOne, led by producer Koji Igarashi. Mr. Igarashi himself even told EGM to "forget about those games" in reference to the failed Nintendo 64 Castlevania titles. Apparently he's not fond of them either.

This new Castlevania will take place in the 11th century, which happens to make it the oldest game in the series' timeline. Once again, you'll take control of a member of the Belmont family (nope, no name here either) and make your way through Dracula's castle. It's said players will be armed with a whip and a sword, along with the usual sub-weapons such as holy water, daggers and the like. Whether you'll be able to equip other varieties of weapons like SotN or simply upgrade your existing ones like the GBA's Circle of the Moon remains to be seen.

One reason the game lacks a full title at this point is that, as Igarashi explains, they're "running out of ideas for musical references." Could we expect to see a new trend in subtitling if they do indeed run out? Time will tell.

As the game was originally due to be revealed at E3 to begin with, expect much more coverage and a hands-on report come May 14. The as-yet-untitled Castlevania is due for release in the US this fall.
