Namco Announces Baten Kaitos and Tales of Symphonia

Namco has finally unveiled the title of the mysterious original GameCube RPG which is being developed by Tetsuya Takahashi's team at Namco subsidary, Monolith Soft, in cooperation with Nintendo. Baten Kaitos (which is actually the name of a fixed star referred to by scientists as Zeta Ceti) tells the story of a planet whose inhabitants have wings. Kalas, the game's protagonist, only sports one wing and is searching for his family. From a visual standpoint, the game will offer pre-rendered 2D backgrounds and 3D character models. The game seems to have a Middle Eastern flair to it.

Baten Kaitos is set for a December 2003 release in Japan.

A second GameCube RPG title, which had been announced some time ago, was also revealed: Tales of Symphonia, the first Tales game for Nintendo's console. Just like in the case of Baten Kaitos, Namco is cooperating on this title with Nintendo. The game's visuals will be cel-shaded and battles will be fought in real-time.

Tales of Symphonia will be released in Japan sometime in July 2003.
