LucasArts Media Mojo

LucasArts made an extremely strong showing at this year's E3, not only showcasing their usual glut of Star Wars tie-ins, but also unveiling a wide selection of original titles in development. More exciting still was the high ratio of RPGs in their upcoming lineup.

On the Star Wars front, LucasArts was showing a pair of RPGs set in a galaxy far, far away. Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided, their Verant developed entry into the ever expanding realm of MMORPGs, was initially slated for release solely on the PC this December, but Xbox and PS2 versions were announced at E3 as well. Our impressions of the game from the show can be seen here. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, a single player Star Wars experience developed by Bioware and set thousands of years prior to the events seen in the movies, will initially hit the Xbox this fall, with a follow-up release on the PC scheduled for spring 2003. Our feelings on this game coming out of E3 can be viewed here. Finally, Gladius, an original concept slated for release on the Xbox, GameCube, and PS2 early next year, draws on a strong sense of Roman myth and history to breathe life into its strategy RPG gameplay set in the gladiatorial arena. As with all of their original games, as opposed to their Star Wars titles, which get licensed out to 3rd party developers, Gladius will be developed in house at LucasArts.
