FFX Side Story Confirmed

In a financial meeting held today, Square announced that the long-rumoured Final Fantasy X side story will be released this year after all. The title of the game has not been decided yet, but it will be released in two different versions: a "Yuna version" and a "Rikku version". It is not known how the two versions will relate, though. The game will supposedly use the engine and world graphics of FFX.

The latest installment in Square's flagship series cost them between 3 and 4 billion yen (about 24 to 32 million USD), as each new installment in the series was developed by a different team and had an independent story and gameplay system until now. But, with these new versions, the main creators will stay as the 'core' of the development team, who will be able to re-use the same development tools, resulting in a development cost significantly lower than before. This announcement marks the first step in Square's previously announced will to expand the series into spin-offs and sub-series.
