E3 - Zelda: A Link to the Past Announced for the GBA

Nintendo announced today at their pre-E3 conference, that their Super Nintendo classic The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past will be ported to the Game Boy Advance. Tentatively titled The Legend of Zelda GBA, the port will also feature a new four-player mode, The Four Swords, where 2 to 4 players can play simultaneously and exchange items using the link cable. Although the focus is mainly on competition, the players will occasionally have to cooperate to solve puzzles, such as joining forces to push a block out of the way. This new mode was demonstrated by the Nintendo representatives and Shigeru Miyamoto himself.

The graphics for the Link to the Past side of the game have been adapted to fit the GBA's screen and appear similar to the SNES ones; the Four Swords part however, features brand new graphics. It is not currently known whether the Link to the Past port will feature other changes or improvements over the SNES version but more details may be unveiled later at the show. The Legend of Zelda GBA is scheduled for a December 9th release in North America, and we have the first screen shots straight from E3.
