Sega's Transition Almost Complete Fourteen months after announcing the discontinuation of the Dreamcast production and becoming a 3rd party publisher, Sega has released its financial figures for the fiscal year 2001/2002. The company posted an operating profit of 11 billion yen ($86.4 million USD), inline with expectations. Sales in both Japan and overseas (North America and Europe) decreased by 4.5% and 38.5% respectively, which was attributed to the end of the Dreamcast production. Nonetheless, the company was able to post an operating income of 14.201 billion yen ($111.5 million USD) compared to an operating loss of 32.018 billion yen ($408.4 million USD) during the fiscal year 2000/2001. Sega attributed the positive results to strong sales of key titles. Fourteen PlayStation 2 titles sold 3.5 million, eight GameCube titles 1.2 million, 13 GameBoy Advance titles 1.7 million and seven Xbox titles 660,000 units. As for the (current) fiscal year 2002/2003, Sega is optimistic about successfully establishing itself as one of the world's leading 3rd party publishers by selling a total of 20 million units of software worldwide. |
