Enix/Tri-Ace's newest title in their Star Ocean series, Star Ocean 3: Till the End of Time, breaks away from pixel-based characters and pre-rendered backgrounds to vast, fully 3D environments.
The battle system will still be in real-time, but with polygon-rendered characters instead of the sprites that fans of the series are used to. Characters are also limited to three party members, instead of four as in Star Ocean 2: The Second Story. So far, only four characters have been revealed: Fate Lingod, Sophia Esteed, Souffle Rossetti and Cliff Fitter.
The world map in Star Ocean 3 will feature a freely rotating camera, as well as in dungeons and town maps. A small compass will be displayed on-screen at all times to help players keep track of their direction.
Star Ocean 3: Till the End of Time is expected to be released within the summer of this year in Japan, with a stateside release to follow in the fourth quarter. Until then, RPGFan has 12 new screen shots and four pieces of artwork for your viewing pleasure.
