In a recent interview, several Japanese companies' VIPs have commented on their projects for the year 2002. Not surprisingly, Enix is still in the very early development stages for DQVIII and Namco has their hands full with Xenosaga and the new Tales game announced a while ago. Chunsoft will seemingly release a new Mystery Dungeon title or possibly a DQ spin off. Square however, does confirm they will re-use some of FFX's material...
Enix
"Although we're not sure about the platform or schedule yet, we're going to start working on a new Tri-Ace game after Star Ocean 3. We will also release Dragon Quest related software. As for Dragon Quest VIII, we're on the contents discussion stages. We'll decide on the platform once we settle the plan."
Square
"We're going to use some of the resources we've accumulated while developing FFX, and we will be releasing several original RPGs in the latter part of the year 2002."
Chunsoft
"This year, we will release two games on the PS2. One will be our company's flagship series. We're also developing another game outside our current series, which we will announce officially in a year."
Namco
"We will release a new installment in the Tales series. Speaking of Tales, we're thinking about developing it on the GBA. Ideally, we would like to release both Tales and Xenosaga in one year. Our character Klonoa will also appear in new games of various genres."
