Square Masterpieces Collection Unveiled

As previously announced, Square is planning to release some of their former titles on the WonderSwan Color under the Square Masterpieces Collection label, the first four titles to be remade being:

  • Romancing SaGa, first installment of the second SaGa trilogy was originally released for the Super Famicom in 1992. Romancing SaGa was the first to use the series' 'Free Scenario System', allowing the story to be modeled according to the players' choices and orientations. Players can build their own main character as well, by choosing his/her gender, abilities and history. The WonderSwan version will supposedly solve some of the questions the SFC version left unanswered. We have some high-res screen shots and a piece of artwork for Romancing SaGa.

  • Hanjuku Hero: Aa, sekai yo hanjuku nare!! is a remake of another SFC game, a rather humorous game where 'egg monsters' are summoned to fight in the battles. Some new egg monsters will be available, created from PlayOnline readers' submissions. You can take a look at some screen shots and artwork.

  • Makaitoushi SaGa was the very first SaGa game, released in 1989 on the Game Boy, although it was released as Final Fantasy Legend in the West. Evolving in a tower, the party will have to solve each floor's mystery to climb up. One screen shot is available here.

  • and Dice de Chocobo, which doesn't fall under our coverage.

Expect the Square Masterpieces lineup to be displayed at this october's Tokyo Game Show. Romancing SaGa and Hanjuku Hero have been announced for a December release at a price of 5,200 yen, the others have yet to receive a release date.
