Shin Megami Tensei Online Announced for the XBox

At the conference held today at the Tokyo International Forum by Microsoft, Atlus announced Shin Megami Tensei Online for the XBox. Previously rumoured to appear on the PlayStation 2, the series' first online title will be produced by Kouji "Cozy" Okada, known for his work on many other titles in the series. Although the series is mostly known only through one of its spinoff series, Persona, in the West, Shin Megami Tensei has a very strong fanbase in Japan and this new installment will most likely ensure the XBox to regain popularity among Japanese players.

Shin Megami Tensei Online will be playable without being online, and will feature voice recognition use and broadband online services. Scheduled to be released sometime in 2002, the game will be an XBox exclusive - Shin Megami Tensei III, on the other hand, is still scheduled for the PS2. There is no word on a possible US release for either title. In other XBox related news, Microsoft also announced the XBox will be released on February 22nd 2002 in Japan.
