EverQuest Deal to Let Characters Switch Servers

In a move combining fan-service with fees, Sony is allowing EverQuest subscribers to move their characters from one server to another:

The EverQuest community continues to grow each day. This community has evolved from the many fan sites, message boards, guilds and from playing the game. Many times when a new friend is made in the community, that friend does not always play on the same server that you do. Because of this, we receive many requests to transfer characters to different servers. Although we understood the desire for the EverQuest players to play with their friends and families on the same server, established policy did not allow for such transfers to take place. This policy was established in order to maintain game balance, prevent fraudulent activity, and to eliminate the heavy burden and cost it would put on the Customer Service Department.

Due to the many requests to transfer characters from account to account, or server to server, we have implemented a value added service and have enacted a new policy to meet these requests. If you desire to transfer a character or characters from your primary account to your secondary account, or wish to transfer to a different server during non server split opportunities, the following service is offered. This is a value added service which requires a fee that can be billed to your credit card.

This service to move your character(s) will be offered temporarily. This service may end at any time without prior notification.

A character can be moved, sans items and coins, for $50 US. Sony is offering deals for multiple character moves, but the price may be prohibitive, and the contract has more clauses than a century of Christmases. Will players shell out the money to get their next big "fix"? Only time will tell if the nickname "EverCrack" really does fit.
