Unearthed "Arcanum"Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura is the current project of the design team from the original Fallout, currently working under the guise of Troika Games after a fallout (pun intended) with Interplay. The game is set in a world where magic is set at odds against an industrial revolution, exploring the theme of magic versus technology as a change from the postnuclear wasteland of Fallout. However, Troika has stated that the game will follow the same trend of nonlinear, extremely varied gameplay which made Fallout "RPG of the Year" back in 1997. And, unlike so many CRPG's to date, Arcanum promises that even PC race will have a significant impact on one's gameplay style, introducing the traditional pen-and-paper RPG race prejudices to the CRPG realm. A classless advancement system, the option for real-time or turn-based battle, beautiful and quite varied visuals, extremely flexible gameplay, multiplayer support, and an official world editor--what more could one ask for?Arcanum is scheduled for release in early 2001; in the meantime, you can take a glance at 48 screenshots and 9 pieces of concept art, or go take a steam train over to the bustling metropolis of information that is Arcanum's official website. They've even got "newspapers" done in a style of late 1800s typesetting! |
