Wraith, the main character of Tsugunai ("Atonement"), made a big mistake: he took the "Treasured Jewel" from a holy island. His intention to save the life of a lord may have been good, but the gods still punished him by tearing his soul from his body. Now, in order to reunite his soul and body, Wraith must travel about the world in spirit form, possessing various people in order to right the karmic wrongs that plague this land and atone for his own sin.

There are over 30 karmic quests in all, but Wraith does not need to complete them all in order to atone for his sin. However, each of the sub-quests provides a different perspective on the overall storyline. Sony claims that this modular story encapsulation helps Tsugunai hurdle the common problem of players forgetting where they are in the game, but we'll see just how effective this is. The quests will be quite varied, ranging from the standard find the doodad, kill the foozle variety to resolving frayed relationships between friends and family.

The key feature to the game is the Possession System. There are quite a number of NPCs which one can possess, each with different abilities, professions, perspectives, and influence with other NPCs. The magic system involves "rune" pieces which are housed in amulets. Depending on the combinations of pieces placed inside the pattern of the amulet, different magic spells and summons are possible. Furthermore, there is an action component to combat, called the Guard System. By pressing combinations of buttons in response to enemy maneuvers, it is possible to reduce the damage of enemy attacks. Each enemy will have different timings and attack styles, including combo attacks and feints, to spice up the combat and make it so that new enemies feel as well as look new.
