Final Fantasy XI on the XBox?

According to IT Pro, a subsidiary of Japanese news source Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Square has agreed to produce a version of Final Fantasy XI for Microsoft's upcoming system, the XBox. Along with the PlayStation 2 version of the game, Final Fantasy XI should be released on both platforms simultaneously in Fall, 2001.

As reported earlier, the PlayStation 2 version of Final Fantasy XI will be able to be played online through the usage of Square's Play Online service, which launches during Summer, 2001. Reportedly, Play Online will now be compatible with both systems, and consequently, gamers playing on either the PlayStation 2 or the XBox will be able to interact in the same world through the usage of this online service.

Production of the XBox version of Final Fantasy XI has already begun, using the development kits distributed to Square this past summer. However, they have been encountering some difficulties due to the language barrier, for all the XBox hardware and documentation is written entirely in English.

While the XBox will be seeing the eleventh installment of Square's flagship series, it will not be receiving the tenth. Final Fantasy X is still reported to be a PlayStation 2 exclusive title.
