PlayStation 2 U.S. Release Info

At a pre-E3 press conference yesterday, Sony Computer Entertainment America announced that the launch price of PlayStation 2 is set at $299 and it will be released on October 26, 2000.

This price includes the console, one Dual Shock 2 controller, AV Multi Cable, and an AC Power Cord, but not a memory card. The Japanese PlayStation 2 came with a memory card because the DVD driver was on it, however the U.S. PlayStation 2 will have them embedded in the hardware. One million units will be available at launch with an additional two million by March 2001. The pricing for both the 8MB memory card and the Dual Shock 2 will run around $34, while games will be $49.

The PlayStation 2 also has some small hardware changes from the Japanese version. It will feature a bay on the back of the console that will eventually allow the connection of a 3.5" inch hard drive and an expansion unit for future network upgrades. Additional information on the peripherals are unknown since Sony's online plans won't be released until 2001.
