Eternal Eye This December

To be honest, I had forgotten Sunsoft existed. Then lo and behold they come out with information on a game that will be released by the end of this year. Their new strategy RPG, Koukuroearpo ~ Eternal Eye looks promising so far. Although some may be put off by its appearance.

The scenario writer of the first three Final Fantasy games(Final Fantasy 1 had a story?!) is responsible for the background story, and the character designer of Atelier Marie is also involved in the game's development.

The premise is basically this, A long time ago the world was ruled by the goddess of destruction, Runa. However, Runa's rule would come to an abrubt end when six heroes known as the clan with eyes of red light, defeat her and ultimately seal her up with the power of jades and mapets. 100 years later, a knight commander from the Cross Kindom, Vohres, is summoned by Runa to assist her in a resurrection. The hero of the game, Ruka happens to be one of the descendants of the Koukuroearpo, who have the power to create mapets which can defeat Runa.

Koukuroearpo ~ Eternal Eye has 3-D polygonal backgrounds spliced with 2-D characters, much like the way Grandia or Xenogears is done. The battle system is a fundamental strategy RPG type in the vein of Shining Force III or Final Fantasy Tactics. There is a new system of attack however. Any descendants of the Koukuroearpo are able to create living puppets(Mapets) by inserting jades into them. There are 24 types of jades which can be mixed to create deadly combinations of power in over 150 kinds of mapets. However, only two mapets can be used in any given battle at once.

So far Koukuroearpo ~ Eternal Eye sounds like it could be an interesting game to check out this holiday season. The japanese release date is set at December 2, 1999.
