Two Quirky Rpg Releases On October 21

On October 21, these two new Rpgs will be released for the Playstation.

The first one is an Rpg/Drama game called Planet Laika. Developed by Quintet and published by Enix, Planet Laika breaks from many traditional rpgs in that it takes place on a known place, Mars. Apparently Mars is dominated by evil minds, and due to these constant mental influences the protagonist, Laika, has multiple personalities. The player will have to switch through Laika's three personalities, Psycho, Visual, and Animal to traverse the game's world. However, a player must be careful to not focus on using one personality type too much, or Laika will eventually develop a bias towards it. This could lead to branching paths in the gameplay as Laika's mind is altered by your actions.

The second game is a fairy tale rpg with simulation elements being developed by Victor Interactive. In Frog's Illustrated Book, you play as a frog who is transformed into a human by magic. The main character's goal is to train himself and become stronger, while simultaneously embracing his new found humanity. To do this he has to make friends with other people, and depending on these friendships the outcome of the game may change.

Games like these two tend to slip through the cracks and fall into obscurity. Partially because they don't neatly fit into one genre, and partly due to their not catching on with a wider audience. While I doubt these two will become the next Final Fantasy, it is interesting to see companies trying something unique from time to time.
