Super Robot Wars Alpha

Super Robot Wars Alpha
PSX: Winter 1999
Dreamcast: To be Announced

Only a month after details of Super Robot Wars 64 have been released, we now have info on the lastest and most likely the last Super Robot Wars game for the Playstation, as well as the first game of its kind for the new Sega Dreamcast.

The Playstation version is further along in development so we have 7 screen shots and 1 piece of artwork for you.

What is interesting about this is while both versions will be released on similar dates, the DC version will be done in polygons and will feature fully 3D battles for the first time in the series! While this may not come as a welcome thing to hardcore Super Robot Wars fans, it is nevertheless a new direction for the series, and we will now be able to have detailed battle scenes with 3D scrolling.

All Units in the 2D version (PSX) has been redesigned, and will feature full unit animation for the first time. This means that we will actually get to see the Zeta Gundam taking out its Beam Rifle, as well as other weapons. Another addition is, like G Generation, all special attacks will get its own little cutscene, with the pilot's animation taking up most the of the screen as they say their battle cries. All the 'super attacks' have also gotten full screen animation as well, and it turns out to be most impressive, in my opinion.

Another new feature is the Combination system, which you can now use in various attacks. For example, you can detach the Boots(the bottom section) of the Victory Gundam and launch them at the enemy, just like in the Anime ;). The units that have always started out already combined will not be forced to do so now. For example, you can go out with only Mazinger Z's cockpit if you really wanted to (and its measly 900 HP)

The Field map has also been revamped as well, with the map being a quarter view that Tactics Ogre made popular, which hints that the direction that you face will affect you stats when enemies attack you (and Vice versa).

In the biggest addition to this series, the Macross series will be featured for the first time, so if you ever wanted to pit Valkyries against other types of Robots, you will finally get your chance. Here is the full list of series that will be featured:

Mobile Suit Gundam
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
