Chrono Trigger for PSX Confirmed!

Originally reported about a month ago by Magic Box, today the existence of a Playstation port of the classic SNES RPG, Chrono Trigger, was confirmed by Japan's V-Jump magazine.

Similar to the PS versions of Final Fantasy 4-6, the Chrono Trigger remake will be unchanged except for the addition of FMV. The remakes of FF4 & FF5 only contained FMV openings and endings, where FF6 contained FMV throughout the game. This PS version of Chrono Trigger, though originally thought to be like the former, will follow the lead of FF6 with movies playing during key events during the game.

It was learned near the end of June that a Japanese animation company was working on a project code-named "Anime of Akira Toriyama". It was originally thought that CT's sequel, Chrono Cross would use the anime cutscenes, but it turns out that CC uses CG FMV (like FF7 & 8). So what is to be done with the anime? Why, it will be used in the Chrono Trigger remake! Not too surprising in the end, since Toriyama designed the characters in the first game, but not in the sequel.

So Square has fulfilled another dream for Chrono fans, but will it come out in the U.S.? Since the game just became official, it's of course too soon to expect an announcement on this, but such a big game should have a good chance of making the trip across the Pacific. However, if not, anybody who played the SNES Chrono Trigger to death (*ahem* like me *ahem*) may not have too much of a problem playing through it in Japanese. The Chrono Trigger remake is due in Japan this fall.
