Best RPG of E3 2007 |
| Fallout 3 -
Fallout 3 does not have the same developer or publisher as Fallout or Fallout 2. It doesn't share the same isometric view or hex-based gameplay. It doesn't even take place within 2,000 miles of the first two titles. For all intents and purposes, Fallout 3 is a re-imagining of the Fallout franchise. There are some who won't like this, the dice-rolling crowd who are twinking a character sheet will probably shy away from Fallout 3's more casual-friendly gameplay.
The fact of the matter is, whether or not hardcore fans of Black Isle's Fallout think that Fallout 3 isn't a true successor to the series, Fallout 3 is shaping up to be a top quality title. It's gorgeous, can be played both with action-oriented gameplay or paused for turn-based selections, and it's in the hands of the developers that have created some of the best open-ended games of our time. Fallout 3 blew everything else out of the water at E3, and we're happy to have seen it, even if it is more than a year away from release.

Hellgate: London - The Hellgate: London demo hasn't changed a whole lot since we saw it at CES, or even since last year's show. Flagship Studios, the developers, mention that the demo shows off only a tiny bit more of the game than the CES presentation. Hellgate: London may have switched publishing hands to EA, but it's still at the top of our list for PC RPGs here at RPGFan. The fact that we can be shown very little new and still salivate to the title shows just how good it should be. |

Jeanne D'Arc - In a show where handhelds took the forefront in the RPG world, some will think it a bit odd for us to give this award to Jeanne D'Arc. The title is not the next in a long line of RPGs, nor is it truly groundbreaking. However, we not only love Level 5, we recognize that a game doesn't have to re-invent the wheel to be one of the best games we've played - it just has to be incredibly polished, and Jeanne D'Arc looks and feels great in all of its aspects. |

Mass Effect - As with Fallout 3, we didn't get to put our hands to a controller for Mass Effect, but we saw it demoed, and it looks superb. BioWare has yet to steer us wrong in an RPG, and Mass Effect looks not only to continue to live up to our expectations of the Edmonton-based developer, but completely shatter them. From a fantastic dialogue system to its absolutely gorgeous graphics to an interesting hybrid battle system, Mass Effect will be the top game on the Xbox 360 this year, if not across all RPGs released in 2007.
