9) Xenosaga Ep. III: Also Sprach Zarathustra 8) Dark Cloud 2 6) Persona 2: Eternal Punishment 4) Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 3) Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 2) Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2 The Shin Megami Tensei series has a firm command over a whopping four slots on my list, and while that might scream blatant and shameless fanboyism to many, I'll be quick to call every one of you a heretic for implying that said games are anything less than the very definition of perfection, an opinion containing the most concentrated magnitude of accuracy and verifiable truthfulness ever known to the mortal man (that's you). Of course, if you feel the need to rebel against the inner gadgetry of the universe and disregard its laws, chances are that you'll still more than likely find a decent enough mixture of games and subgenres spanning the entire decade in question. From console-definers like The World Ends With You to swansongs released on the PS1's dying breath and expansive trilogy finales like Xenosaga III to fresh and snappy beginnings with Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, everything on my list exemplifies not only what I consider to be the best of the decade, but arguably the best of the genre. Comprised of humor, spaceships, junkyards, town-building, horse wieners, sweeping narratives and time-tested majesty, this is my list of the very best of what our last ten years had to offer. |
