Ilima's two pokémon for this battle are a Yungoos and a Smeargle. Now, the average trainer will scoff and think, "Feh, no problem." But Lando knows better. As a trickster himself, he suspects some shenanigans and will not let his guard down. Lando is right to be suspicious because while Ilima's Yungoos hits with a sledgehammer wallop, it's that Smeargle who's the real killer. Not only is that beast wickedly strong and fast, but it also has a suite of moves that are super effective against every pokémon in Lando's arsenal. To make matters worse, that slimy Ilima is not at all shy about using Full Recovers and Potions to heal his pokémon.
(ASIDE: Several Nuzlockers like to use the rule limiting, or even eliminating, item use, but that's precisely what brought many veterans to a screeching halt right here. If you're a Nuzlocker who managed to win this battle without using potions, you're a better trainer than I, because even with Potions this battle comes within a hair's breadth of ending Lando's run. Now, let's go back to the action.)
Lando leads off with Pepper, who's able to get in a good Rock Smash against a Leering Yungoos whose Tackles pack a punch... until Ilima gives it a potion. Not wanting to waste Rock Smashes on it and waste turns using Potions every time it Tackles, Lando swaps out for Bennie, who's able to Water Gun his way to victory. Ilima brings out Smeargle and Bennie is swapped out for Pepper. Pepper gets in a nice Rock Smash, but Smeargle's speed and raw power mercilessly take out Pepper before he can get another one in! Nooooooo! Not Pepper!! This is awful!!!
Okay, no use crying now, there's still a battle to finish. And win or lose, Lando's team won't go down without a fight! Bennie is brought back in to try and do some damage, and though he lands a solid Water Gun, he is felled too. Curse this Smeargle and his cheap moveset! It looks like it's up to Bam Bigelow. Bam Bigelow gets in an Ember that puts Smeargle's HP in the red, but Smeargle counters with Water Gun. Lando gives Bam Bigelow a potion, but Smeargle is ready with another Water Gun that leaves Bam Bigelow with only 3 HP. Unsure of whether to heal or attack, Lando risks an attack, hoping that Smeargle doesn't attack or get healed first. Luckily, Bam Bigelow attacks first with Ember and the battle is won... but at what price?
Reader, are you familiar with the term "pyrrhic victory?" In plain language, a pyrrhic victory is where you win a battle but lose so much that the victory seems hollow. Well, this was a pyrrhic victory. Lando managed to defeat Ilima, but nearly lost all his pokémon. Bennie may have been a dweeb, but he wasn't a bad sort. He fought valiantly and deserved better than an early grave! And Pepper... that adorable, affectionate little scamp who eagerly accosted foes with wonderful moves like Echoed Voice and Rock Smash will be sorely missed. He had all the makings of being Lando's ideal sidekick for the long haul. But alas it's not to be, thanks to a level 10 Smeargle that will now haunt my nightmares the way Whitney's Miltank from Pokémon Crystal did.
When this Nuzlocke Run was started, it was falsely thought that Lando's dead pokémon could simply be released back into the wild. Even this early on, Lando established enough bonds and memories with Bennie and Pepper that they couldn't just be erased from existence. So, Box 4 is the "Cemetery Box." Box 4 is chosen because there are two ways to say 4 in Japanese (yon and shi) and the word shi is also a homophone for death.
After giving Bennie and Pepper a proper sendoff, a broken but not defeated Lando must now lick his wounds and persevere onward with the ever faithful Bam Bigelow. He is one tough little kitty who truly lives up to his namesake. The journey has barely started, but with only one pokémon left, this will be an uphill climb.
