Minecraft: Story Mode to be Delisted on June 25th
Another Telltale Games project will soon disappear.

In the wake of Telltale Games' abrupt closure, a number of their games are slated to be removed from digital storefronts (with some of their earliest works already being unavailable). Joining the pile, it turns out, is Minecraft: Story Mode, the studio's collaboration with Mojang and one of Telltale's more popular titles.

According to Mojang, the company was unable to find a way to keep selling the game, and as a result, both seasons of Minecraft: Story Mode will be pulled on June 25th. The company is encouraging players to purchase the game now if they haven't already, and to make sure that all of the episodes have been downloaded (implying that the games will not be re-downloadable after June 25th).

Personally speaking, I can't begin to express how sad and angry this makes me. Regardless of how one felt about Minecraft: Story Mode, or Telltale Games' body of work in general, the fact that these games are disappearing in the wake of the studios' closure is a huge blow for games preservation. It's also a grim reminder about the nature of digital storefronts and the impermanence of digital media: while our industry has seemingly embraced digital-only titles and platforms as the way of the future, one cannot help but look at the Telltale Games debacle and worry about the state of the medium. It's saddening, and sobering, to realize that the work of hundreds of artists can disappear forever because of a studio closure or an expired licence.
