In a surprising turn of events, it appears that Telltale Games, the development studio (best known for their work on The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us, and other licensed video game properties) is shutting down, apparently due to bankruptcy.

Further details on the matter have been reported by Joe Parlock, who has written for Polygon and several other outlets. According to Parlock, the studio will remain active with a skeleton crew to finish their prior commitments. There are some conflicting reports on the status of Telltale's ongoing projects: according to USGamer, several sources have claimed the final season of The Walking Dead will be ended prematurely after the second episode releases next week. The company's other projects, such as Season 2 of The Wolf Among Us and the previously announced Stranger Things game, have all been cancelled.

Telltale did release a statement, which you can read below.

Today, Telltale Games made the difficult decision to begin a majority studio closure following a year marked by insurmountable challenges. A majority of the company's employees were dismissed earlier this morning, with a small group of 25 employees staying on the fulfill the company's obligations to its board and partners. CEO Pete Hawley issued the following statement:

"It's been an incredibly difficult year for Telltale as we worked to set the company on a new course. Unfortunately, we ran out of time trying to get there. We released some of our best content this year and received a tremendous amount of positive feedback, but ultimately, that did not translate to sales. With a heavy heart, we watch our friends leave today to spread our brand of storytelling across the games industry."

Telltale will issue further comments regarding its product portfolio in the coming weeks.

We'll keep you posted on any further details regarding the closure of Telltale Games. As huge fans of their work, our hearts to out to those who have lost their jobs, and we hope these talented developers are able to land on their feet.
