At long last, we embark on a Dragon Quest.
09.03.18 - 10:36 PM

Hello, everyone! Happy Labor Day. Welcome back to another installment of Coming This Week, where we take a look at RPGs coming out within the next span of seven days. It's finally near time to embark upon the grandest of quests, one which may very well feature a fire-breathing lizard or two: but, of course, Dragon Quest XI can't hog all the spotlight this week, as there are a couple of other interesting releases headed our way. So that's the starting point, then onward:

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age - PS4, PC (September 4th)

Let's get the big one out of the way, eh? Dragon Quest XI is the latest installment in the storied Dragon Quest franchise, the series that has had such a profound impact on the Japanese gaming market that Dragon Quest games release on weekends so that students and businessmen alike won't play hooky. The scope of Dragon Quest's influence is undeniable. The series is the Ultima of JRPGs, and the eleventh mainline entry is set to bring a smorgasbord of classically styled JRPG goodness to PS4 and PC. Check out the indelible Rob Rogan's review if you'd like to know more.

Destiny 2: Forsaken - PS4, XB1, PC (September 4th)

The latest DLC expansion for Destiny 2 is set to shake things up in a big way. For ardent fans who have stuck with Destiny 2 through thick and thin, prepare for heartbreak with the death of a beloved character (and you can't go crying spoilers on me, it's in literally all of the prerelease coverage for this game). A new Gambit mode, two new locations, a new raid, new weapons and gear, and even more await you, Guardian. Now suit up.

428: Shibuya Scramble Screenshot

Who doesn't love a good mystery story? Spike Chunsoft has been providing fans of niche Japanese visual novels several boons over the years, and 428: Shibuya Scramble looks to continue this promising trend. This game has a unique aesthetic (especially nowadays) that uses live-action video to tell an engaging story that is impacted by the player's decisions. There's a demo out if you'd like to try it for yourself!

Moonfall Screenshot

Moonfall Ultimate - PC, XB1, Switch, PS4 (September 4th-5th)

Side-scrolling hack-and-slash RPGs have seen a tremendous wave of growth in today's indie market, and the Slovakian development team Fishcow Studio are leaving their mark on the genre with Moonfall Ultimate. An enhanced edition of the original Moonfall game, Moonfall Ultimate comes equipped with a couch co-op mode and several other improvements. The game launches for most platforms on September 4th, and on Xbox One a day later.

Yo-kai Watch Blasters Screenshot

Yo-kai Watch Blasters: Red Cat Corps/White Dog Squad - 3DS (September 7th)

Oh, hey, Yo-kai Watch! That's a blast from the relatively recent past. Two new spinoff entries in the popular Japanese monster-collecting franchise are hitting the 3DS this week, bringing over 400 Yo-kai for the player to battle and capture, with real-time action gameplay. Plus, players can use their save data from any version of Yo-kai Watch 2 to unlock some exclusive Yo-kai!

And that's a wrap for this week, all. Check back with RPGFan for the latest and greatest RPG coverage.
