A recent issue of the Japanese publication Weekly Famitsu featured an interview with Falcom president and CEO Toshihiro Kondo in regards to the recently announced The Legends of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV ~The End of Saga~. There are a few spoilery details discussed in the interview which have been distilled below, so reader be warned!

Trails of Cold Steel IV

According to Kondo, the subtitle End of Saga, is very important, conveying that this game is a very significant milestone for the Trails series, but specifically for the Cold Steel subseries, which began in 2013, as it will mark the end of the Cold Steel titles. Falcom very much wants to appease the expectations of longtime fans, and since this is the first title that the company has said a game will be the final entry of a series ahead of release, they feel pressure to deliver. Apparently development for the game is about 45% complete as well.

Trails of Cold Steel IV

Kondo goes on to say that Trails of Cold Steel IV is a very dense RPG featuring more characters than ever before, including the most playable characters ever. The team is hard at work to make sure that each character is given their time in the light, though the game is still predominately a single story RPG. A question Kondo asks the player to think about going into the game: "is Rean the protagonist in the first place?". The state of the empire has changed dramatically, and quests will explore these changes due to the curse and mobilization of the nation. Meanwhile Crossbell Police Department Special Support Section members Lloyd Bannings and Elie MacDowell will begin moving towards the conclusion discussed at the end of The Legend of Heroes: Ao no Kiseki.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV ~The End of Saga~ is expected to release on the PlayStation 4 in Japan during the Fall of 2018.

Update 1/15/18 @ 9:20am PST: A previous version of this article mistakenly stated that Cold Steel IV marks the end of the entire Trails series. We have corrected this above to note that it is simply the final title in the Cold Steel subseries. We apologize for the error.
