Just what is a digital devil?

I have yet to play Digital Devil Saga myself, but I probably need to, because without experience with the game, the mere idea of a "digital devil" only makes me think of THAT Buffy episode, which is an unfortunate comparison.

My own poor comparisons aside, our Retro Encounter crew recently played through the first game of Atlus' 2-game PS2 classic. If you haven't heard the episodes, check those out.
