Lionhead's Fable Legends will be free-to-play when it is released for Xbox One and Windows PC later this year. The developer claims that players will be able to play the entire game for free with everything that affects gameplay able to be earned just by playing the game.

As is common with many free-to-play games, Fable Legends will rotate its roster of available heroes. Those heroes you really like will be available to purchase with silver, the in-game currency that can be gained by progressing through the game. Most importantly, your progress with a certain hero will be persistent.

One of the primary goals for the game is to be fair and foster a happy community. This is a direct response to the general opinion that free-to-play games can be nefarious and force players to pay-to-win. Players will be able to purchase gold with real-world money, which can be used to buy in-game items and heroes. Additionally, players playing as the villain can purchase ally creatures and traps with in-game silver and gold.

Lionhead did state that some cosmetic purchases in Fable Legends can only be purchased with real-world money. However, they are quick to point out "the entirety of Fable Legends' storyline and all of the quests we release this year and forever" will be available for free.

There is no announced release date for Fable Legends but we do know it will be playable cross-platform between Xbox One and PC. Players playing on the Xbox One will need to have an Xbox Live Gold Subscription.
