I can't help but get excited whenever Square Enix comes out with more information on Final Fantasy Explorers. Director Atsushi Hashimoto recently divulged new information that should have fans salivating with anticipation.

The basic concept for the game came from the idea of how cool it would be to fight monsters from the Final Fantasy series in a multiplayer setting. Upgrading weapons is a huge part of the experience. You'll collect materials in the environment to craft and enhance the various armaments of the world.

Items found in the environment allow for the temporary transformation into classic Final Fantasy characters like Cloud and Squall. Transforming into Legend Characters has been a serious draw for some players, but Hashimoto says that they aren't a necessary part of the game. They are simply an option for players looking to spice things up a bit. Players can also recruit and breed monsters to fight alongside them in battle. Monsters gain experience in battle, allowing you to further customize your style. Here's hoping you can recruit a Tonberry!

Final Fantasy Explorers is out on December 18th in Japan for the Nintendo 3DS.
