Mystic Chronicles Preview
To arms, Guardian Beasts!

I stopped by Natsume's booth today and got a look at Mystic Chronicles, an upcoming PSP port of the Kemco iOS RPG. The game stars amnesiac hero Lux, who sets out on a journey to discover the truth behind his mysterious past. Sound familiar? Fans of 16-bit RPGs will feel right at home with the retro aesthetic of Mystic Chronicles, with top-down exploration and first-person battles reminiscent of SNES classics. A unique feature is the Guardian Beast system, where powerful creatures can be assigned to each character (think Lufia II) to give them an edge in battle. Furthermore, there is a coliseum where Lux and his companions can test their mettle, a multitude of optional quests, and a crafting system that allows for the creation of several hundred weapons.

This new version features a widescreen presentation and, more importantly, a completely re-localized and expanded script. In addition, $0.99 microtransactions have been added to help busy players level up more quickly, though they are not necessary to complete the game. This allows the game to have a classic feel that will appeal to fans of old-school, grind-heavy RPGs, while keeping it accessible to newcomers and people that prefer an easier difficulty.

Mystic Chronicles will cost $14.99 USD when it releases in early July, and the game will be compatible with both PSP and Vita at launch.
