Funcom and Electronic Arts have announced that their modern-day MMORPG, The Secret World is dropping its subscription fee for player access to content and storylines. Much like Guild Wars 2, players simply need to purchase a retail or download version of The Secret World and they're good to go. Per Funcom, "There are no complicated rules or restrictions, no complex matrixes telling you what you can and cannot access. Pay Once, Play Forever – it's that simple."

Players looking for an advantage can still subscribe at the normal fee to receive $10 or €10 per month for use in the in-game store, an item that grants double experience for an hour (with a 16 hour cooldown), 10% off the in-game store, and an item-of-the-month gift.

Future expansions, like the upcoming issue #5, will be available at a fee, though customers who have a full game account registered by the end of December will receive it for free. Otherwise, the main storyline of issue #5 will run $5.
