E3 2012: Runes of Magic New Chapter Next Week
Fires of Shadowforge brings free dwarves.

Free to play MMOs don't get massive coverage here at RPGFan due to the stigma that comes with "freemium" games, but considering how long Frogster's Runes of Magic has been around (since 2009) and the number of players it boasts, it has earned its way onto our news page.

Frogster, a development shop based in Berlin, took some time to give us a first look at "chapter five" (essentially an expansion pack) called "Fires of Shadowforge." This chapter introduces a new race (dwarves!), a new starting area, and a new instance for high level characters.

Since the game has been around for this long, Fires of Shadowforge is a "very special" content upgrade.  It doesn't just introduce the dwarves as a whole new race, but also adds two new classes exclusive to them. The two new classes are the Champion, a tank class who can transform into something called a "Rune Robot," and the Warlock, who practices psychic magic.

Not only can the game be played for free via a full game client download, Frogster has introduced a browser client called Kalydo.  It is currently available in the UK, and will be coming soon to the US. This will allow the game to be played through a browser (but only on Windows), making the game even more accessible.

Frogster insists that the game is fully playable for free, and they have more chapters planned for release on an 8-10 month per chapter timeline, so if you haven't tried Runes of Magic before, there is no time like the present. The new chapter rolls out on June 12, and at this price, you have nothing to lose but your time.
