More on your character, difficulty, and... permadeath!

Permanent character deaths have been a touchy issue at times in Nintendo's long-running Fire Emblem strategy RPG series. They've made some of the games quite difficult if you wish to keep all your units alive, and it's turned a few people off of the series altogether. In the last Nintendo DS installment, Heroes of Light and Shadow (the sequel to Shadow Dragon and which English fans never saw), permanent deaths were made optional for the first time in the series.

In Fire Emblem: Awakening, the option to turn 'permadeaths' on and off will make a return. Classic Mode will turn permadeaths on, while Casual Mode will return your lost units in the next chapter or mission. As far as difficulty goes, the game will offer Normal, Hard and Lunatic modes. You'll be able to acquire up to 40 units, many of which you can promote to a higher class after a certain level - another feature that's a Fire Emblem staple.

As we mentioned last week, Awakening will have two main characters: the prince Krom, and a character which you create. Your character will wake up with a bout of amnesia, and wake up to find Krom and his younger sister Rizu, both of the kingdom of Iris, at your side. Somehow you know Krom's name. After showing off your battle skills, you join Krom's group of vigilantes, which he leads. Rizu is described as selfish, yet kind, and is of the Sister class, while Krom is a Lord.

Fire Emblem: Awakening releases in Japan for the Nintendo 3DS on April 19th.
