RPGFan Soundtracks Spotlight: Xenogears
One of the most well-beloved albums of all time!
01.28.12 - 12:16 AM

From ominous opening to rapturous choral conclusion, the Xenogears soundtrack is among the few I own in physical form. Yasunori Mitsuda's masterpiece evokes every mood, emotion, and theme while remaining a cohesive whole with Irish/Celtic overtones and vocal undertones. Although more effective for those who played the game, Mitsuda's mastery of video game music ensures that anyone who appreciates orchestral music will play this OST time and again. Of surprising fidelity for its time, the Xenogears OST has so many excellent tracks that to begin a list would inevitably lead to disappointment as favorites would go unmentioned. In fact, nearly every one of the 44 tracks is worth listening to, a rarity in video game music.

Mitsuda created something appropriately arcane for the cabalistic Xenogears, something that creeps into both mind and spirit, and it is this music for which he will be remembered. The soundtrack itself will be remembered as one of the greatest soundtracks of all time. This is the reason Japanese RPGs have a reputation for being the best in video game music.
