iOS This... Month? Fara & Mage Gauntlet Equals a Good Week
Two RPGs with a sense of humor, a dose of retro goodness, and, for one of them, enough hats to last a lifetime.
10.19.11 - 11:21 PM

Okay, so I admit I've missed a few weeks of the now ill-titled iOS This Week. Things kept getting in the way, and while I doubt a huge portion of you guys and gals who visit RPGFan really come here for iOS news, I do apologize for skipping recent weeks. Admittedly, there hasn't been a great deal going on RPG-wise, but that changes in two ways this week, with the long-awaited releases of Pixel and Texel's Fara and Rocketcat Games' Mage Gauntlet.

New Releases

Fara (iPhone/iPod touch)
by Pixel and Texel
Price: $0.99 (launch price)

Originally teased over two months ago, Fara is the first release by Pixel and Texel, also known as Andrew Strickland and Brett Estabrook, formerly of Id Mobile. We've been keeping an eye on Fara and its lively hand-drawn artwork since August, and this Friday, the game will finally release. Even better, Fara is launching at a mere $0.99. I've been playing the game a bit this week, and I like what I've seen. It's a treat for the eyes, with responsive controls, catchy music, plenty of achievements and more that I'll save for my review. Until then, take a look at the game's official trailer below:

Mage Gauntlet (iPhone/iPod touch)
by Rocketcat Games
Price: $1.99 [iTunes link]

Rocketcat Games has been talking about Mage Gauntlet for... well, not very long, but I've been so excited to try it out, it's felt like a long time. A gorgeous 16-bit-styled RPG, Mage Gauntlet looks to help us re-live the glorious days of the SNES action RPG. It's got hack and slash combat, 84 levels, 86 achievements, hordes of enemies, big bosses, two difficulty modes and... 110 different hats. Between the trailer below, and this excerpt from the game's official site, I don't know how you can say no to Mage Gauntlet:

Rocketcat Fan Pack
A 2 dollar IAP for late adopters, you'll get it for free. Contains a rocketcat pet that will follow you around and give a small stat boost! Also contains seven hats and one sandwich you can wear as a hat.

Mage Gauntlet is available now for $1.99, though this launch sale only lasts until Saturday, when the game will then sell for its regular price of $2.99. The aforementioned Rocketcat Fan Pack is free for early adopters who buy the game before next Monday.

Wrap Up

Have you all updated your devices to iOS 5 yet? I highly recommend doing so. There's countless new features and tweaks, though Notification Center and iMessage alone add an immense amount of value to our beloved Apple products.

Anyway, go check out this week's new releases (and while we don't cover them, there's several other promising games just released as well). Come back soon for reviews of both Fara and Mage Gauntlet.
