Final Fantasy XIII-2 Announced
A direct sequel to the flagship Square Enix series will be released in 2011!
01.18.11 - 10:19 AM

Today brought the Square Enix First Production Department Premier event in Japan, and with it, some major news updates for some of Sqaure Enix's Final Fantasy titles. The most shocking and interesting news is probably the announcement of Final Fantasy XIII-2, a direct sequel to last year's Final Fantasy XIII. While there had been reports in recent days of the company registering a Final Fantasy XIII-2 web address, there was no confirmation of the new game until today's conference. The Director of Final Fantasy XIII, Motomu Toriyama, is returning to the helm for the sequel as well.

Even more surprising than the announcement was the given release date for the new game. According to Square Enix, Final Fantasy XIII-2 will be released in 2011 for both the PS3 and Xbox 360. The US PlayStation Blog clarified things a slight bit for US release, saying that the game will be available "this winter." No, that does not mean next month, but rather a year or so from now.

A trailer of the game at the event showed Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII, wearing new armor and fighting an unknown assailant. Word is that the trailer will be available online, and in HD, on January 20th.
