EA Inks Deal With 38 Studios on "Project Mercury"
That's Curt Schilling's Studio - and it's a doozy of a deal.

Several years ago at the Dark Age of Camelot Roundtable in Las Vegas, I had a chance to meet with author R.A. Salvatore, who showed a great appreciation for RPGs in the digital space. Around that time, I also had the chance to meet Curt Schilling at SOE's Fan Faire, also held in Las Vegas, and the baseball pitcher is a big fan of EverQuest and EverQuest II. He started Green Monster Games, which later evolved into 38 Studios, which is working on an MMORPG on top of this new project. Throw in Todd McFarlane, Electronic Arts, and Big Huge Games, creators of Rise of Nations and new subsidiary of 38 Studios, and you have all of the elements of this newest deal to come from Electronic Arts.

Codenamed Project Mercury, this new collaboration is a brand new IP created by Todd McFarlane and R.A. Salvatore will feature a team that is seasoned in the creation of quality RPGs. Ken Rolston of The Elder Scrolls fame will helm the production, and there will be other Bethesda veterans on the title, as well as designers from Civilization.

GameSpot was able to quote EA Partners General Manager David DeMartini about BioWare's involvement in this newest RPG project from EA. "The guys at BioWare were actually involved in the early discussions with the folks at Big Huge," DeMartini informed GameSpot. "They've had an opportunity to have some preliminary discussions and preliminary talks... So, I certainly think that you could expect strong collaboration that would include the BioWare team."

With this announcement, it's clear that Electronic Arts is focused on creating a quality RPG product for the consumer. Keep your eyes peeled to RPGFan for more information on Project Mercury as it develops
