Late last year, Nippon Ichi Software (NIS) president Souhei Niikawa told the Japanese press that his company would increase the number of PlayStation 3-based projects. In financial material released earlier today, the Gifu prefecture-based makers of Disgaea revealed that the newest installment of their flagship franchise was one of the games in the works for Sony's platform. NIS has sold more than 1.6 million copies of the Disgaea series worldwide to date.

In addition to the new Disgaea game, NIS plans to release seven games during its upcoming fiscal year, ending on March 31st 2011. Out of those eight games, six will be original titles. Going ahead, the company will carefully select games which will be published in North America by NIS America. The focus will apparently be on PlayStation 3-based software. Furthermore, NIS plans to rebuild and strengthen its presence in the mobile gaming market.

NIS singled out declining quality and problems pertaining to sales estimates as key factors contributing to its lower than expected performance during the current fiscal year. Instead of the projected 1.79 billion yen ($19.92 million USD), the company reported sales of 1.13 billion yen ($12.57 million USD). Instead of the estimated net profit of 12 million yen ($133,500 USD), NIS suffered a loss of 376 million yen ($4.18 million USD).
