E3: Knights in the Nightmare PSP Hands-On
A quick look at the improved PSP version of the Sting/Atlus title.

Knights in the Nightmare for the Nintendo DS was certainly a unique title when it was released. A combination of strategy, RPG... and scroll shooter? Needless to say, many fans absolutely loved it for not only its unique gameplay elements, but also the great Sting artwork and storyline. In October, it will see a North American release on the PlayStation Portable, with some significant control changes, as using a stylus on your PSP screen probably isn't the wisest choice in the world.

With enhanced 16:9 visuals, a new intro movie directed by the man who crafted the Persona 3 and Persona 4 intro movies, and direct control of the "wisp" with the analog nub, players will have a different experience than the DS. For those of you who didn't have a chance to play the DS title, players take control of the wisp, which functions as a control cursor. Using the wisp, you choose a weapon from the top of the screen and then charge it on your characters by hovering over them. It takes a certain amount of time to charge each weapon, so you'll have to hover for a while. Enemies attack the wisp by shooting bullets at it, so it's your job to avoid these bullets. With that, players have an action-strategy-shooter-RPG on their hands. It's really a very unique combination, and the PSP iteration changes up the controls for the better.

Players familiar with Riviera and Yggdra Union are used to the enhanced ports from the GBA version, and Knights in the Nightmare is similar in that regard. Probably the single most important upgrade for fans of Sting's Dept Heaven games is the addition of a new playable character: Princess Yggdra from Yggdra Union. Keep your eyes peeled for more information on Knights in the Nightmare for PSP as it nears release.
