Optional Permadeath In Upcoming Fire Emblem
If only death was optional in real life.

The recently announced Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem – Hero of Light and Shadow is bringing a handful of new features to the long-running strategy RPG series. We've already discussed the reveal of the "My Hero" system, which will allow players to create a character who will partake in an extended Prologue and have their own side story. The newest feature in the game looks to shake the foundations of the principles on which the series was founded, but only if you want it to.

The permanent death of characters in battle has been a series staple for Fire Emblem games in the past, but had the tendency to alienate casual players. Now those players will be able to enjoy the story without having to worry as much about losing one of their favorite characters to a lucky shot from a hidden archer. This change is completely optional, so die-hard fans of the series will still be able to maintain a tradition of permadeath 20 years in the making.

Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem – Hero of Light and Shadow will be released in Japan on July 15th; no North American or European release has yet to be announced.
