Make no bones about it: the MMORPG market is saturated. MMOs open and close every week (perhaps even every day). The average lifespan for an MMORPG? No one can say for sure, considering all the small-scale/failed ventures of the past decade. But one thing is sure: it's hard to compete in this market.

Harder, still, when you're not even charging a monthly subscription fee.

With all of these obstacles, the wildly popular Guild Wars title, along with its four expansions (three direct-download, one disc-based), has managed to not just survive, but thrive. Today we celebrate the game's fourth anniversary. As veteran players take time to reflect on the many hours they've sunk into this complex MMORPG, we took the time to talk with Ben Miller, one of the senior designers for ArenaNet (who developed Guild Wars and are now under NCsoft's corporate umbrella).
