Square Enix Talks Next-Gen MMORPG
07.27.06 - 2:36 PM

At the presentation of Intel's new Core 2 series of CPUs in Japan, Square Enix president Youichi Wada made a guest appearance and gave a short speech. Wada started off stating that the costs involved in developing games were obviously on the rise. However, the Square Enix president did not see a transition from high-end to low-end games as a result. Instead, higher development costs were only leading to a diversification of the game industry's business model. Within this diversified landscape, the importance of the high-end segment was in fact on the rise, according to Wada. Together with Intel he wanted to deliver richer content to users in the future.

Apart from highlighting a benchmark for the Core 2 series CPUs utilizing the PC version of Front Mission Online, the Square Enix president also demonstrated a single screenshot of his company's mysterious next-generation MMORPG. This screenshot however was not new, but rather taken from a trailer shown at this year's E3 in May. Saying only it was a developer's desire to improve the user experience, Wada avoided mentioning any target platforms for the system. However, Wada mentioning the MMORPG at today's Intel conference was yet another clear sign that the game will indeed appear on the PC platform.
