Sega News

The Sega Smash Pack, featuring a brand new Dreamcast system, comes with 2 Dreamcast titles, and 10 Genesis titles, 2 of those being Sega's classic RPGs, Phantasy Star II and Shining Force. It has been shipped out to retailers, and can be purchased for $179.99. Reviews of Phantasy Star II and Shining Force can be found here.

Also having been released to retailers is the highly anticipated Phantasy Star Online for Dreamcast. I'm currently on backorder for the domestic release of this game, so make sure to rush and grab your own copy if you can, ASAP. If you're stuck in a situation like mine, or you didn't read it before, be sure to check out my import review of the game here.

Also in the news is the confirmation of a Dreamcast price drop, bringing the system down to a $99.95 price tag, scheduled to take effect on February 4th. Also confirmed by Sega is their decision to discontinue production of the Dreamcast console on March 31st. Sega says they will be focusing on software, and will continue supporting the console, in addition to beginning development for other consoles such as the Game Boy Advance, and the PlayStation 2.

With the new price tag, and two of the arguably best RPGs of 2000, getting a Dreamcast is still a good option. With Sega opening development to other consoles, we could perhaps see a Skies of Arcadia 2 on PlayStation 2 someday. Who knows what the future will hold?
